I opened Nelson Khor facebook this morning and got a sad & shocking news
Choo Tse Chien passed away yesterday at 2pm. He had a cardiac arrest at young age of 41/
I knew him from a few birding trips at Fraser's Hill and Bukit Tinggi... wonderful nice chap, and he send me 2 CD of birds song of SEA free of charge ... Bird Photography community will surely miss you...

My first time photographing birds at Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland.
This Streaked Wren-Babbler was one of my 4 lifer found there.
Now I know why Madibider can get macro shot if this species. They are so used to photographer at that Radar Station perimeter fence, and we can approach it to a few feet, and can even photograph it with a handphone. Here it playing around with Sphagnum moss.

When I arrived up there at 7.30am, there were already 3 photographers, One waiting for Snow-browed Flycatcher and Niltava family at second Telekom tower and 2 at the far end of fence waiting for Mountain Leaf-Warbler . So, I just introduce myself and join them.
By the time I was getting home at 1pm, there are at least eight cars up there.

Pacific Swallow gathering nesting material

I was parking my car when I noticed a small flock of Pacific Swallow at a water puddles. I though they were drinking water from that rain water. After lunch I brought my camera and shot a few frame from a car hand held without beanbag , only then than I knew that they were gathering a nesting materiel. They specifically choose the mud pellets from the root of grass, and include part of the root before flew off.

I was in hurry for work without realizing that my camera setting was at TV mode (speed priority) and at f32 ISO 1600. Lucky that the speed was at 1/500. I always shot bird in AV mode (aperture priority) and set it a the widest f5.6.
After reviewing the pictures, mistake was not bad at all. With the small aperture (f32), the fore and background are in focus , giving more emphasis about the water puddle and grass - environmental shots.

Here are common birds at Shahzan Inn bird feeder.
You can easily see Silver-eared Mesia , Long-tailed Sibia and Chestnut-capped Laughing thrush. For Fire-tufted Barbet you need to wait and be patient. It will come down when all other birds left and less crowd.

Fire Tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus) is a common bird at Fraser's Hill, very responsive to call.
Getting a decent and low angle shot is another challenge, unless you are willing to wait patiently at Shahzan Hotel birds feeder.

Bee Eater at Taman Mutiara Raub

I was cycling around Taman Mutiara yesterday morning when I saw a flock of Bee Eater perched very near the road. I rush back for my camera. By the time I setup my Betterbeamer and tripod, the flock already left. Only a few perched very high on top of dead tree.

Today I determine to get that bid. I'm not cycling. Set my photography gear and by 7.15am already park my car near the big dead tree. Sure, at 7.20am a flock of about 30 birds perch on that tree, making noise and flying around to catch their breakfast. A few fly low and perch about 15 meter from me, and stay there for a few seconds. That enough for me to shoot a few frames at a very high ISO2500, before the birds fly to their next destination.

This first-winter juvenile male Blue and White Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana), currently is a star attraction at Bukit Tinggi. Bird photographers from as far as Singapore, Penang and even Taiwan came on weekend here. I'm from Pahang, sure not to miss this beauty.

whenI first arrived at 7.30am, this is what I got.
Later when the lighting get better, I got much improved shots. This bird is not afraid of photographer and will perch regularly to feed on insects and worms at Botanical Garden.

The usual resident made their usual appearance and I will post it later.

Four hours at Bukit Tinggi, Pahang

I have not been to Bukit Tinggi for bird photography for more than a year. My last visit there was in Jan 2010. There was a lot of activity and news and amazing pictures from bird forum and blog about the new migrant birds there.
Busy work schedule and other commitment prevent me for going up there earlier, until this morning. I took half day off and went there for four hours. The Botanical Japanese garden was quiet with only four photographers - Jason Tan, Bernet (?spelling), one Singaporean (forget his name) and myself.

arrived here at 7.15am *(sunrise here)*, and left at 11.00am.

this is what I got. A giant Longhorn Beetle.(photographed with Nokia N79)

What about birds?.

This flocks of Egret flew past the Raub Golf Course, along the valley and Sempam river sharp at 7.30am for the past few weeks. The show continue for about 20 minutes.
The 400mm lens hand held is ideal for this predictable flight path. The sun was supposed to be at my back, but not appear until 9am. Sigh!

I have seen this Red Junglefowl (Ayam Hutan) at Raub Golf Course a few time, but very difficult to photograph. Only this morning I managed to captured it digitally. He was feeding at a putting green with a flock of Zebra Dove, so engrossed and didn't noticed me hiding nearby.

Birding during Sultan of Pahang's Birthday

I was undecided what to do during Sultan of Pahang's Birthday holiday. Birding or cycling?.
Plan 1. Birding to Fraser's Hill
Plan 2. Long distance cycling to Kuala Lipis
I woke up late for Fraser's Hill birding. I need to depart at 6am from home to catch the 7am up at the Fraser's Gate.(odd hour up and even hour downhill)
My planed for long distance cycling to Kuala Lipis was postponed, non of my friend willing to join.
So, I went to my usual watering hole -Raub's Golf Course for two hours birding. No new species, but the same old resident. (except for Asian Brown Flycatcher which is a migrant)

New PC but same old backyard birds

I had not updated this blog for the past few days due to my home PC hard-disk crashed.
Lucky that most of my birds/nature pictures were archived at an external disk.
Acquired a new desktop two days ago, and now busy learning a new Window 7 system and a new photo editing software.
The problem is that I don't have a time to go out searching for a new species, and here are just the same old backyard birds.
